Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to commonly asked questions.

Caring pet owners know that most pets adjust better to their owner's absence and experience less anxiety and stress when they can remain in their home environment. Peace of Mind Pet Services makes this possible with daily visits to your home. In addition to meals, exercise, playtime and cleaning litter boxes or cages, our professional pet sitters may also administer medications and perform other pet-care duties. That is why in-home pet care is the choice of pet owners and the "pet-preferred" method of vacation and travel care. We also provide vital home-care services while you are away, including mail or newspaper pick up, plant care and watering, placing trash outside for pickup or rotating the lights and opening or closing the blinds to make your house look lived in. A professional pet sitter provides peace of mind on many levels.

There are many advantages to in-home pet sitting. Pets are happier and healthier in their home environment full of familiar objects, sounds, and smells, and using a pet service eliminates the stress and uncertainty of being left in an unfamiliar place. We will keep your pet on the schedule to which they are accustomed. This includes, but is not limited to, designated walking times, correct food amounts, and administering any medications your pet may be on, per your instructions. With a pet sitter, there is minimal exposure to illness from other animals, or stress and anxiety from from being around other animals. Most importantly, your pet receives love and personal attention while you are away in a quiet, comfortable setting-your home!

You will not be inconvenienced or upset by transporting your pet to a facility nor will you have to impose on a friend, neighbor or relative to care for your pet, but instead you can rely on a pet care professional who will put your pet's needs first-especially if you have particularly needy pets or specific care instructions! While you are away, you can feel confident your pet is in safe, capable, and caring hands, plus the pet sitters can provide additional home services while caring for your pet, such as watering plants, bringing in the mail, and making your home more secure by utilizing crime deterrent services provided by most pet-sitting services. Our pet sitters are reliable adult professionals whose aim to provide exemplary pawstomer service, and are happy to adjust based on your needs, concerns, and feedback.

Yes! Our standard practice is to set up an initial consultation with the owner (complimentary) which allows us to meet you and become acquainted with your pets and familiar with their home and routines, as well as ask for detailed information to assist us in providing the best care for your pets and security for your home. Generally, we can also arrange for your individual pet sitter to be present at the initial consultation, although this option does require a consultation fee to cover their time. We want to ensure that you are completely comfortable with your sitter. The consultation and initial paperwork will only need to be done once. After that, simply call or use the web site to order pet sitting services in the future! Check out our Pet Sitters Bio’s page to virtually meet them!

Generally, we try to use the same sitter for your pets when possible. By doing this, the sitter and pet can form a bond that will not only allow the pet to feel more comfortable and reduce stress, but also allows us to better monitor your pet for anything abnormal. However, our pet sitters have lives of their own and sometimes they aren’t available. The benefit of having a team of qualified professionals means that should your sitter not be available for any reason, we can generally still tend to them by having another sitter fill in. Every sitter will receive care instructions and training specific to your pets and household. If you’d like to make sure you meet any sitters before they enter your house ($18 consultation fee applies per sitter) simply let us know at your initial consultation and we will make a note of it.

Preparation can make a big difference in how smoothly things go for your pet when the pet sitter comes to visit. Ensure the pet sitter has a phone number where you can be reached and if you have new keys made, try them out to make sure they work. Make sure to clean food and water dishes before leaving town and provide extra food, litter and other supplies just in case you are not able to return when planned. Adjust the thermostat to keep the house comfortable for your pet during your absence. In warm weather, a closed-up house can get dangerously hot in a short time. Leave a list of phone numbers in case the pet sitter needs to contact service or maintenance companies while you are away (plumber, electrician, cleaning service, yard maintenance, pool service, etc). Tell the pet sitter of any household areas that are off-limits to your pets or to the pet sitter. Secure access to those areas before leaving home. Finally, be sure to let your vet know you will be out of town and have them note that you authorize the pet sitter to bring your loved one in if there’s a health issue.

You can assist your pet sitter by helping to make sure there are no problems while you are away. Be sure to tell the pet sitter about all health problems your pet may have and provide written verification that your pet is up to date on its vaccinations. Ensure your pet is well socialized and allows strangers to handle them and provide a list of your pet's favorite hiding places. This will prevent the pet sitter from worrying if your pet is not where expected since the sitter will know where to look. Let your pet sitter know any helpful tips or quirks your pets have that may make them more comfortable. Leave a note! Although we will collect paperwork detailing your routine, we love notes specific to each set of visits, since subtle things often change between them!

Generally, our policy is no news is good news! We don’t want to distract you from your vacation by reminding you your pets might be missing you. For daily/regular clients, a daily journal is provided where your sitter will leave notes about each visit, so you know what your pet has been up to. Our vacation clients should* receive a note prepared on the last visit to let you know how everything went (*if you come home early, your sitter may not have left the note yet! In that case, you are welcome to text or e-mail and we will provide the information). If you would prefer mid-service communication, we are happy to coordinate text or e-mail updates.

No, we do not offer either of these services, although we are happy to adjust or increase the amount of visits to better accommodate your pets. If your pets can't be accommodated by us, we are happy to refer you to local boarding facilities, or work on cooperative alternative solutions, such as if your friends or family are spending the night and you'd like us to tend them during the daytime.
